Batumi, Georgia - attractions, pictures

Batumi is the capital of Adjara, a popular seaside resort.
To get to Batumi is not a problem, there is an airport in the city (Batumi airport site). The airport is small and old (there are no computers at the check-in counters, coupons are filled manually), but copes with its task. To the city is close, the most outskirts of Batumi begins directly near the airport.

The climate in Batumi is subtropical, in the height of summer, it may well be raining with a storm, but it does not last longer than a couple of days.

The beach in Batumi is pebbles, large or small, depending on the intensity of the waves. A lot of people, but all the places are enough, as the beach stretches along the whole city and beyond. Just stretches and the embankment, wide and beautiful, with parks and sculptures - a great place for walking.

Batumi, as a city, is known since Roman times, but there are few historical sights here and they are all fairly young (XIX century). Actually, this is exclusively the churches, and what kind of soul - and Christian, different concessions, and a mosque and a synagogue.

In 10 km. south of Batumi, near the village of Gonio, is the Gonio-Apsaros fortress. You can get there by any transport going to Sarpi (this is a settlement in which the crossing point of the Georgian-Turkish border is located, so there are many minibuses).
Here was the Roman city of Apsara, quite large - there was also a theater and a racetrack, from which there was nothing left. After the Romans, the fortress was used by Byzantines, then by the Turks, but what was left inside (or found as a result of excavation), mostly refers to the Roman era. The walls are probably Turkish.
The entrance to the fortress is not free.

Another country attraction is the Batumi Botanical Garden. It is also 10 km away from the city, but in the opposite direction. The garden is big, it's nice to walk, but it's rather stuffy and it's located on a pretty steep hill.

In Batumi there is a cable car leading to the neighboring mountain, from where you can admire the panorama of the city.

Other attractions are recently built buildings and other monuments-fountains of the most bizarre shape. Construction is actively continuing - there is literally no corner where anything would not be built. Exception, except that the very center - they have already built everything. :)
The result of such a large-scale restructuring is not all like, because it looks all this, sometimes really wildly - there is too much variety of styles in one place. Well, the taste of architects sometimes changes ... On the other hand, looking at areas that have not yet undergone restructuring, you think that it's better than leaving it as it is.
Well, in general, this is the business of local residents and authorities. Tourists like it. In the evening all this is beautifully highlighted, the fountains of color music are included - beauty.

In the next photos - the quintessence of the construction concept of the new Batumi (if it is, of course :). This is the field near the central beach. From left to right - Chacha Tower (a free fountain with a popular Georgian pomace brandy, is turned on for 15 minutes once a week :), Radisson Hotel, Batumi skyscraper, unknown tower (Porta Batumi), the tower of the Georgian alphabet.

The border with Turkey from Batumi is 20 km. You can go from Batumi to Turkey for shopping. Turkish lira without any problems are bought in Batumi.
From Batumi go minibus and buses to Sarpi, on the other side from the border, from the same point, already called Sarp - minibus (in Turkish "dolmush") to the nearest village of Kemalpasha, which is a large bazaar. Passage of the border on foot does not represent difficulties, but there can be decent queues. In the Internet sayd that everything is much more expensive in Kemalpasha, and it's better to get to the next town - Hopa. I drove, not for shopping, but for the sake of interest. In my opinion, this is completely pointless. Hopa - a small, uninteresting town, and if something is cheaper there, you need to add the cost of round-trip (about 10 lire).
If desired, you can arrange a tour of the nearest interesting Turkish cities, but one day you can not manage it, you need to go with an overnight stay. The distance to Kars or Erzurum is 250-300 km., on mountain roads it is about 5 hours one way.

In Batumi there are no usual tourist offices, but a free map of Batumi and even with a thick guidebook can be taken directly at the airport upon arrival.

In general, in Batumi we liked to rest. The beach is normal, food-drink is cheap, there is something to see.
