Gjirokaster, Albania - attractions, pictures

Gjirokaster (Gjirokastër, Girokastra), it is a small town (less than 25 thousand inhabitants), in the south of Albania. The different pronunciation of the name is explained by the location - from here to the Greek border about 100 km., to Italy about 200 (in this case, by the sea, of course).
Gjirokaster is one of two Albanian cities, included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites (along with Berat), but there is only one landmark - a fortress. In this list the city fell due to a well (more or less) preserved original Turkish building of the XVII-XIX century, mainly to special houses of a tower type (kule), which remained very little in the world.
Gjirokaster - the birthplace of the communist leader of Albania Enver Hoxha. I suspect that this played an important role in the preservation of architectural monuments.

In addition to the kule, there are other original houses, especially on the way to the fortress.

The fortress of Gjirokaster exists since the XII century, but its present appearance is due to a large-scale reconstruction of the early XIX century.

Inside the walls of the fortress there is a separate house, serving as the mausoleum of some revered bektashi - Baba Sullani and Baba Kaplani. The Sufi order of the Bektashi in Turkey was abolished at the beginning of the 19th century, but continued to exist unofficially, and Albania became its center, as local residents willingly accepted Sufism as opposed to the official religion of the conquerors - Sunism.
Judging by the honorary name "Baba", Sullanti and Kaplani were the heads of the local community.
