Elbasan is the third largest city in Albania (about 140 thousand inhabitants).
Shkumbin river :)
The main attraction of Elbasan is the Ottoman fortress, built in the time of Mehmed II. During the construction, were used the stones of the previous Byzantine fortress .
Inside the fortress, from the old buildings only the mosque remained.

Xhamia Mbret (XV в.)
Here, in fact, that's all. Somewhere on the outskirts there is also an Orthodox
church of St. Anastasia, ostensibly XV century. That on a photo for what you
will not tell, but before it I did not reach because of a downpour.
So why go to Elbasan? This is the largest Albanian city closest to Macedonia, and equally close to both checkpoints (about 80 km to Struga and to Pogradec). In this case, up to Pogradec, minibuses go enough often. If you go to Macedonia or from Macedonia, it is not harmful to make a stop in Elbasan, because Albanian public transport does not contribute to the rapid achievement of the destination. :)
